De belangrijkste personages uit Catch-22 maken opnieuw hun opwachting zoals Yossarian, de eigenzinnige luchtmachtkanonnier, en Milo Minderbinder, de dubieuze regelneef die zijn werkterrein verlegd heeft naar de wapenindustrie. Yossarians commentaar op het gekonkel van de politici en schimpscheuten aan het adres van de president, die het hele boek door consequent wordt aangeduid met ‘het lulletje’, sluiten direct aan op de satirische toonzetting van Catch-22. Datzelfde geldt voor de schimmige activiteiten van zijn compagnon Minderbinder, de personificatie van de oncontroleerbare en levensgevaarlijke manipulaties van het militair-industrieel complex. Toch wijkt ‘Sluitingstijd’ sterk af van zijn beroemde voorganger door de introductie van twee andere oorlogsveteranen: Sammy Singer en de buurjongen met wie hij is opgegroeid, Lew Rabinowitz. Hun vertelperspectief zorgt voor een meer realistische toonzetting, want met name in de figuur van Sammy Singer heeft Heller heel wat autobiografische elementen verwerkt.

Thirty-three years after his bestseller, ‘Closing Time’ has now been released, and the subtitle on the cover leaves nothing to be desired: The sequel to Catch-22. In ‘Closing Time’, as the Dutch translation is titled, Heller takes stock of the past fifty years. The main characters from Catch-22 make a reappearance, such as Yossarian, the maverick bombardier, and Milo Minderbinder, the dubious wheeler-dealer who has shifted his operations to the arms industry. Yossarian’s commentary on the scheming of politicians and jabs at the president, consistently referred to as ‘the little prick’ throughout the book, align directly with the satirical tone of Catch-22. The same applies to the shady activities of his companion Minderbinder, the personification of the uncontrollable and deadly manipulations of the military-industrial complex. However, ‘Closing Time’ significantly diverges from its famous predecessor through the introduction of two other war veterans: Sammy Singer and the neighbor he grew up with, Lew Rabinowitz. Their narrative perspective provides a more realistic tone, especially since Heller has infused a lot of autobiographical elements into the character of Sammy Singer.
