In deze met vaardige hand gecomponeerde sonnetten getuigt Jan Kal van zijn onuitroeibare liefde voor een meisje uit een “rechts milieu”, waar deze linkse activist “natuurlijk niet te verteren is”. Het meest bewogen zijn de gedichten rond het crisiscentrum, waar hij het geestelijk zieke meisje Ellen, dat later zelfmoord pleegt, rust geeft. Als maatschappijcriticus geeft hij hier en daar een satirische haal naar kunstbroeders die zich al te graag koesteren in welvaart en succes. Een bezoek aan de Sovjet-Unie levert een serie indrukwekkende bezinningsmomenten op. Kals psalmvertalingen, waarin God als de rechtvaardige helper centraal staat, zijn in het geheel van de bundel nogal navrant.

In these skillfully composed sonnets, Jan Kal expresses his indomitable love for a girl from a “right-wing milieu,” where this left-wing activist is “naturally not digestible.” The most moving poems are those centered around the crisis center, where he provides solace to the mentally ill girl Ellen, who later commits suicide. As a social critic, he occasionally delivers satirical jabs at fellow artists who are all too happy to bask in prosperity and success. A visit to the Soviet Union provides a series of impressive moments of reflection. Kal’s psalm translations, in which God is central as the righteous helper, are somewhat poignant in the context of the collection.
