De jonge Engelse schrijver Darley heeft na de dood van zijn Arabische vriendin de bruisende havenstad Alexandrië verlaten om rust te zoeken op een eilandje van de Griekse Archipel. Hier vindt hij gelegenheid om het kleurrijke verleden te reconstrueren en te proberen een verklaring te vinden voor de vaak zo onbegrijpelijke gedragingen van zijn vrienden. Zij allen hebben in Egypte tot de kring van de zeer welgestelde Koptische bankier Nessim Hosnani behoort, die gehuwd is met de mooie Justine. Lawrence Durrell, geboren op 27 februari 1912 in Jalandhar, Brits-Indië, was een Brits dichter, romanschrijver en reisboekenschrijver. Hij staat vooral bekend om “Het Alexandriëkwartet,” een serie van vier romans die zich afspelen in de kosmopolitische stad Alexandrië in Egypte. Durrell’s werk wordt geprezen om zijn lyrische stijl en complexe karakters, evenals zijn vermogen om de sfeer en cultuur van de plaatsen die hij beschrijft levendig tot leven te brengen. Naast “Justine,” omvatten zijn andere bekende werken “Balthazar,” “Mountolive,” en “Clea,” die de rest van het Alexandriëkwartet vormen. The young English writer Darley, after the death of his Arab girlfriend, has left the bustling port city of Alexandria to seek peace on a small island in the Greek Archipelago. Here, he finds the opportunity to reconstruct the colorful past and try to find an explanation for the often incomprehensible behaviors of his friends. They all belonged to the circle of the very wealthy Coptic banker Nessim Hosnani in Egypt, who is married to the beautiful Justine. Darley particularly seeks clarity about his relationship with her. Although he lived with the nightclub dancer Melissa in Egypt, he was also Justine’s lover.
The novel Justine is the overture of the Alexandria Quartet, in which the author aims to describe love in its various forms.
