Douglas Adams begon zijn carrière met het schrijven van radio- en tv-scripts en scoorde in 1978 een hit met de BBC-serie “Het Transgalactische Liftershandboek” en de daarop gebaseerde roman. “Het Leven, het Heelal en de Rest” vormt hierop (na “Het Restaurant aan het Eind van het Heelal”) het tweede vervolg, dat aansluitend op voorgaande delen dient te worden gelezen.
In dit derde boek uit de reeks belanden Arthur Dent en zijn vrienden weer in bizarre situaties en universum-brede avonturen. Het verhaal zet de absurdistische en humoristische toon voort die de serie kenmerkt. Hoewel het verrassingselement stilaan is verdwenen en de humor sterk verbaal is, biedt dit deel weer die combinatie van Monty Python-eske avonturen doorheen het universum, met absurde theorieën en ‘eeuwige’ waarheden. Adams weet opnieuw te verrassen met zijn unieke schrijfstijl en briljante absurditeit. De lezer wordt meegenomen in een wervelwind van gebeurtenissen en ontmoetingen die zowel vermakelijk als diepgaand zijn.
Het boek is zeker geen teleurstelling voor de liefhebber van de reeks. De combinatie van humor, filosofie en sciencefiction blijft even sterk en onderhoudend als in de vorige delen, en Adams’ scherpe pen zorgt ervoor dat de avonturen van Arthur en zijn vrienden tot het einde boeien.

Douglas Adams began his career writing radio and TV scripts and scored a hit in 1978 with the BBC series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and the subsequent novel. “Life, the Universe and Everything” (following “The Restaurant at the End of the Universe”) is the second sequel, which should be read in sequence with the previous parts.
In this third book of the series, Arthur Dent and his friends find themselves in bizarre situations and universe-spanning adventures once again. The story continues the absurdist and humorous tone that characterizes the series. Although the element of surprise has somewhat diminished and the humor is strongly verbal, this installment offers the same combination of Monty Python-esque adventures through the universe, with absurd theories and ‘eternal’ truths. Adams once again surprises with his unique writing style and brilliant absurdity. The reader is taken on a whirlwind of events and encounters that are both entertaining and profound.
The book is certainly not a disappointment for fans of the series. The combination of humor, philosophy, and science fiction remains as strong and engaging as in the previous installments, and Adams’ sharp writing ensures that the adventures of Arthur and his friends captivate until the end.
