Kader Abdolah’s vertaling van “De Koran” maakt dit heilige boek toegankelijk voor de Nederlandse lezer. De Koran, gebaseerd op de Thora en de Bijbel, heeft een unieke structuur met 114 soera’s die zich vertakken zoals olijfbomen. Abdolah heeft soms inleidende teksten toegevoegd aan de soera’s om context te bieden. Voor zijn vertaling gebruikte hij de oude Arabische Koran van zijn vader als brontekst, en hij raadpleegde Perzische en Nederlandse vertalingen. Hij vroeg ook regelmatig advies aan zijn bejaarde oom Aga Djan in Iran. “De herhalingen in de Koran horen bij het karakter van het boek, dat bedoeld was voor ongeletterde mensen. Zonder de tekst tekort te doen, heb ik herhalingen weggehaald. Een deel daarvan bleef onvermijdelijk,” aldus Kader Abdolah.
Kader Abdolah (pseudoniem van Hossein Sadjadi Ghaemmaghami Farahani, geboren in 1954 in Iran) is een bekende Iraans-Nederlandse schrijver en columnist. Hij vluchtte in 1988 naar Nederland en verwierf bekendheid met zijn romans en columns die vaak thema’s als ballingschap, identiteit en de botsing tussen culturen behandelen.

Kader Abdolah’s translation of “The Koran” makes this holy book accessible to Dutch readers. The Koran, based on the Torah and the Bible, has a unique structure with 114 surahs that branch out like olive trees. Abdolah has sometimes added introductory texts to the surahs to provide context. For his translation, he used his father’s old Arabic Koran as the source text, and he consulted Persian and Dutch translations. He also regularly sought advice from his elderly uncle Aga Djan in Iran. “The repetitions in the Koran are part of the character of the book, which was intended for illiterate people. Without diminishing the text, I have removed repetitions. Some of them remained unavoidable,” says Kader Abdolah.
