Cadavre exquis by Bob Van Laerhoven tells the story of a painter, Drees, who is in a rather desperate phase of his life. He learns that his elderly mother has died in his Flemish hometown and decides to attend her funeral. What follows is a colorful mix of stories in various narrative perspectives—the first, second, and third person—as well as monologues, exclamations, and other texts, in which Drees constantly appears as the main character. To make things even more confusing, the author often suggests that all of this is merely fiction. The overarching theme is that anyone who gets closely involved with the protagonist is likely to die, usually due to the fatal failings of Drees. Despite the title “Cadavre exquis,” referring to a surrealist genre, there appears to be little resemblance to this genre, unless the author intends to ironize his wild associative creation with this term.
