Alma met de Vlassen Haren door Stijn Streuvels is een roman die in 1931 werd uitgegeven door Davidsfonds in Leuven, en is het 234e deel in de Davidsfonds Volksreeks. De eerste editie van dit boek, gedrukt door Excelsior in Brugge, bevat illustraties van Frans Nackaerts en telt 232 pagina’s.
Na de consternatie rond de ‘wulpse’ Mira uit De teleurgang van de Waterhoek, waagde Streuvels zich aan de creatie van een nieuwe hoofdfiguur: Alma, een stichtelijke tegenhanger van de frivole Mira. Tijdens een ‘praatje’ met Willem Putman in De Standaard (8 mei 1929) zei Streuvels: “Ik werk aan het leven van een heilig meiske van te lande. Alma heet ze, ‘Alma met de vlassen haren’. Ik wil in die vrouwenfiguur een contrast uitbeelden met ‘Mira’ uit ‘De teleurgang van den Waterhoek’. Want heilige meisjes zijn er hier, juist zoals er ‘zondige sletten’ zijn.”
Eén zin omschrijft het thema van de roman, beknopt maar treffend: “De zoekende Alma die in twijfel is over wat God met haar voorheeft, meent in het kloosterleven haar roeping te zullen vinden.” (Citaat uit de bijdrage Alma met de vlassen haren van M. de Smedt in Jaarboek 7 van het Genootschap).

Alma met de Vlassen Haren (Alma with the Flaxen Hair) by Stijn Streuvels is a novel published in 1931 by Davidsfonds in Leuven, and is the 234th volume in the Davidsfonds Volksreeks. The first edition of this book, printed by Excelsior in Bruges, features illustrations by Frans Nackaerts and consists of 232 pages.
After the controversy surrounding the ‘wanton’ Mira from De teleurgang van de Waterhoek, Streuvels ventured to create a new main character: Alma, a moral counterpart to the frivolous Mira. During a conversation with Willem Putman in De Standaard (May 8, 1929), Streuvels said, “I am working on the life of a holy girl from the countryside. Her name is Alma, ‘Alma with the Flaxen Hair’. I want to depict a contrast in this female figure with ‘Mira’ from ‘The Decline of the Waterhoek’. For there are holy girls here, just as there are ‘sinful sluts’.”
One sentence succinctly yet strikingly describes the theme of the novel: “The searching Alma, who is in doubt about what God intends for her, believes she will find her calling in the convent life.” (Quote from the article Alma met de vlassen haren by M. de Smedt in Yearbook 7 of the Society).
