Joseph Heller’s Een voorval vertelt het verhaal van Bob Slocum, een veelbelovende en welvarende manager die aan de buitenkant alles lijkt te hebben: een goede baan, een gezin, en tal van vriendinnen. Achter deze façade schuilt echter een man die wordt verscheurd door twijfels, angsten en frustraties. Zijn basale analyse van de maatschappij is dat iedereen bang is voor de ander. Deze angsten en twijfels worden nog meer naar de oppervlakte gebracht wanneer Slocum binnen zijn bedrijf een promotie wordt aangeboden ten koste van een collega die hij, bij uitzondering, niet haat.
De roman volgt Slocum terwijl hij worstelt met zijn hang-ups, twijfels en morele dilemma’s. Uiteindelijk accepteert hij de promotie en reageert agressief op zijn tegenstanders. Het boek biedt een diepgravende en zeer herkenbare zelfanalyse van Slocum, maar mist de humor en scherpte van Heller’s debuut, Catch-22. However, beneath this facade lies a man torn by doubts, fears, and frustrations. His basic analysis of society is that everyone is afraid of everyone else. These fears and doubts are brought to the forefront when Slocum is offered a promotion at his company at the expense of a colleague he, unusually, does not hate.
The novel follows Slocum as he grapples with his hang-ups, doubts, and moral dilemmas. Ultimately, he accepts the promotion and lashes out at his opponents. The book offers a deep and highly relatable self-analysis of Slocum but lacks the humor and sharpness of Heller’s debut, Catch-22. The repetitive nature of Slocum’s narrative makes the book less readable at times, but the sharp observations of human weaknesses and the ruthless view of the corporate world remain powerful.
