Vormen is een poëziebundel van M. Nijhoff, gepubliceerd in 1946 door C.A.J. Van Dishoeck in Bussum. Deze vierde editie, bestaande uit 71 pagina’s, meet 14 cm x 21 cm. Dit exemplaar is in uitstekende staat (Fine Plus) en heeft een hardcover. Het boek werd gedrukt door G.J. Thieme in Nijmegen.
Vormen werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in november 1924 en was M. Nijhoff’s tweede poëziebundel. Nijhoff, geboren in 1894 en overleden in 1953 in Den Haag, is een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse dichters van de 20e eeuw. De eerste druk van de bundel had een oplage van 750 à 800 exemplaren en werd mooi uitgegeven met een omslag ontworpen door Jan van Krimpen op verzoek van de dichter. De bundel kreeg veel aandacht in de pers en leverde Nijhoff in het voorjaar van 1925 de Amsterdamsche prijs voor Poëzie op.
Vormen bevat 39 gedichten, geschreven over een periode van bijna tien jaar. De totstandkoming van de bundel verliep moeizaam en werd gekenmerkt door vertragingen en herzieningen. Nijhoff had moeite met het voltooien van de gedichten, die hij vaak herschreef en aanpaste. Deze onzekerheid over de compositie van de bundel en de gedichten zelf leidde tot vele klachten van de dichter en aanmaningen van zijn uitgever.
De gedichten in Vormen variëren sterk in thema en stijl, wat de diversiteit en complexiteit van Nijhoff’s poëtische stem weerspiegelt. Het openingsgedicht, Satyr en Christofoor, werd speciaal geschreven om een typografisch probleem op te lossen en toont Nijhoff’s zorg voor de compositie van de bundel.
