Shamim Sarif’s second novel, following her debut which won a British encouragement award for black female talent, explores the blossoming friendship between an older couple in Boston and the emerging lesbian relationship of their children. This framework offers a glimpse into a dramatic love story during the 1950s in the Soviet Union. The investigation into the true circumstances surrounding the murder of the dissident Katja forms the core of the story. The structure, atmosphere, and contemporary characters in the two families, all affected by the unresolved past of one of them, are excellent. The book is well-written, well-translated, and well-designed.
