“Geschift. Een komische roman” is de Nederlandse vertaling van “Emotionally Weird” door Kate Atkinson, vertaald door Inge Kok. Deze eerste Nederlandse editie werd uitgegeven door Atlas in Amsterdam/Antwerpen in 2000. Het boek omvat 408 pagina’s en meet 13,5 cm x 21 cm. Het is uitgevoerd als een softcover met perfecte binding en verkeert in uitstekende staat.
Het is 1972 en de twintigjarige studente Effie heeft zich met haar moeder Nora teruggetrokken in het vervallen huis van hun voorouders op een eiland voor de ruige westkust van Schotland. Effie vertelt over het studentenleven van de jaren zeventig, vol vrije seks en drugs. Nora is behoedzaam met het vertellen van haar levensgeschiedenis, terwijl Effie hoopt dat ze eindelijk de identiteit van haar vader zal onthullen. Dat wil zeggen, als de verhalen die op het Schotse eiland door moeder en dochter worden uitgewisseld, waar zijn.
In “Geschift” speelt Kate Atkinson, de auteur van “Achter de schermen”, op humoristische en ingenieuze wijze met de verhouding tussen taal en betekenis en de (on)mogelijkheden van fictie. Daarnaast geeft ze een hilarisch beeld van de jaren zeventig en een bijzondere kijk op de moeder-dochterrelatie.
Het studentenleven in de jaren zeventig kenmerkte zich veelal door een rijkelijk ontspannen sfeer. Een studente aan een Schotse universiteit observeert in deze periode haar medestudenten, terwijl zijzelf van harte deelneemt aan het ludieke gezelschap van vrienden en vriendinnen waarin zij is beland. Bovendien heeft zij een ambivalente verhouding tot haar moeder, die op een eilandje voor de Schotse kust woont. Uiteindelijk komt de hoofdpersoon achter haar werkelijke identiteit. De studenten doen alles wat hen tot dan toe verboden was: roken joints, verdiepen zich in vreemdsoortige wijsgerige theorieën en zwetsen urenlang vruchteloos, precies zoals dat in die tijd gebeurde. Ook de professoren blijken vage, wat wereldvreemde figuren die zich overgeven aan de nieuwe tijd met al haar tijdconsumerende geneugten. Hoewel zuivere fictie, toch zullen velen de sfeer uit die tijd herkennen. Aardige karaktertekening.

It is 1972, and twenty-year-old student Effie has retreated with her mother Nora to the dilapidated ancestral home on an island off the rugged west coast of Scotland. Effie recounts the student life of the 1970s, full of free sex and drugs. Nora is cautious in telling her life story, while Effie hopes that she will finally reveal the identity of her father. That is, if the stories exchanged by mother and daughter on the Scottish island are true.
In “Geschift,” Kate Atkinson, the author of “Behind the Scenes at the Museum,” humorously and ingeniously plays with the relationship between language and meaning and the (im)possibilities of fiction. Additionally, she provides a hilarious depiction of the 1970s and a unique perspective on the mother-daughter relationship.
The student life in the 1970s was often characterized by a richly relaxed atmosphere. A student at a Scottish university observes her fellow students during this period while wholeheartedly participating in the playful company of friends she has joined. Moreover, she has an ambivalent relationship with her mother, who lives on a small island off the Scottish coast. Ultimately, the protagonist discovers her true identity. The students do everything that was previously forbidden to them: they smoke joints, delve into strange philosophical theories, and chat aimlessly for hours, just as it happened at that time. The professors also turn out to be vague, somewhat otherworldly figures who indulge in the new era with all its time-consuming pleasures. Although pure fiction, many will recognize the atmosphere of that time. Nice character depiction.
