Pieter Daens. of hoe in de negentiende eeuw de arbeiders van Aalst vochten tegen armoede en onrecht is een formidabel boek dat de strijd van de arbeiders in het Vlaamse stadje Aalst tegen sociale en politieke misstanden in de negentiende eeuw beschrijft. Het verhaal draait om Pieter Daens, een schrijver en uitgever, die samen met zijn broer Adolf Daens, een priester, in 1893 de Christene Volkspartij oprichtte. De gebroeders Daens interpreteerden de Pauselijke encycliek “Rerum Novarum” op een socialistische manier, wat hen in conflict bracht met de behoudende katholieke machthebbers, die niets hebben nagelaten om hen en hun aanhangers te breken.
Door de levendige verteltrant en de eigentijdse benadering zal de lezer dit werk geboeid uitlezen. Het boek is geïllustreerd met tweeëndertig reproducties van tekeningen, foto’s en documenten, wat bijdraagt aan de historische authenticiteit van het verhaal. Pieter Daens. or How in the Nineteenth Century the Workers of Aalst Fought Against Poverty and Injustice is an impressive book that describes the struggle of the workers in the Flemish town of Aalst against social and political injustices in the nineteenth century. The story revolves around Pieter Daens, a writer and publisher, who, along with his brother Adolf Daens, a priest, founded the Christian People’s Party in 1893. The Daens brothers interpreted the Papal encyclical “Rerum Novarum” in a socialist way, which brought them into conflict with the conservative Catholic authorities who did everything they could to break them and their followers.
The lively narrative and contemporary approach ensure that readers are engrossed in this work. The book is illustrated with thirty-two reproductions of drawings, photos, and documents, contributing to the historical authenticity of the story. Boon received the Multatuli Prize for this book in 1972, and it was also made into a film. The cover shows a scene from the movie.
