The father follows the call, quits his job, and begins painting, while the mother retreats to bed and eventually ends her life with pills.
Despite the chaos and poverty, Nicholas finishes school, finds an office job, and stays with his father. Family life becomes increasingly complicated when the father burns his paintings in the stove and accidentally (?) sets the house on fire, dying in the process. This tragic event leaves Nicholas in shock, and he begins a quest to find the only remaining painting of his father.
Nicholas finds the painting with a teacher and falls in love with the teacher’s daughter, who is newly married to a man she does not love.
