Bij Lady Molly. Een dans op de muziek des tijds is het vierde deel van Anthony Powell’s serie. In dit deel is Nicholas Jenkins ongeveer dertig jaar oud. Nog steeds ongetrouwd en werkzaam als scriptschrijver, ontmoet hij oude en nieuwe vrienden tijdens ontvangsten en etentjes, die de ambiance van dit boek vormen. Widmerpool is verloofd met Mildred, tweemaal weduwe en nogal wat ouder, de zus van mevrouw Conyers, wiens man haarfijn uitlegt waarom die verloving misloopt. Anthony Powell, geboren op 21 december 1905 in Londen, was een vooraanstaand Engelse romanschrijver die vooral bekend is door zijn twaalfdelige romancyclus A Dance to the Music of Time. Powell’s werk wordt gekenmerkt door zijn scherpe observaties van de Engelse samenleving en zijn vermogen om complexe karakters en hun interacties te beschrijven. Naast A Dance to the Music of Time schreef Powell ook andere romans en autobiografische werken. Hij ontving vele literaire prijzen en zijn werk blijft een belangrijke invloed op de Engelse literatuur. At Lady Molly’s. A Dance to the Music of Time is the fourth volume in Anthony Powell’s series. In this installment, Nicholas Jenkins is around thirty years old. Still unmarried and working as a scriptwriter, he meets old and new friends at receptions and dinners, which form the setting of this book. Widmerpool is engaged to Mildred, a twice-widowed woman who is quite older, the sister of Mrs. Conyers, whose husband explains in detail why the engagement will fail. More colorful characters appear, such as Quiggin, the professional hanger-on, and Erridge, the professional victim. At the end of this volume, Nicholas is engaged to Isobel Tolland, the best of five sisters. The translation is good. Previous volumes in the series include: A Question of Upbringing, A Buyer’s Market, andThe Acceptance World.
