In deze bundel figureren thema’s als verwondering over de dagelijks terugkerende natuurverschijnselen, de tegenstelling tussen schijn en wezen, de taal als spelvorm, een fascinatie voor de dood, de doden en het begraven, en de zin van het bestaan, gemeten aan tijd, ruimte en menselijk contact. Deze zestienjarige, opvallend talentvolle dichteres heeft in deze “ik-gedichten” reeds een aanzienlijke vaardigheid bereikt in het oproepen van sferen en vooral in het woordenspel. Dit laatste geeft tevens haar beperking aan: vooral in de slotregels van de gedichten streeft ze naar koddige, spirituele opmerkingen, die in -te- veel gevallen de zeggingskracht van het voorafgaande nadelig beïnvloeden. Die pointes hebben geen vervreemdend of ironisch effect; ze zijn alleen maar “leuk”. Poëzie zoals we aantreffen in schoolkranten, maar dan wel van een hoog niveau. Vooral onder jongeren zal de bundel weerklank vinden.
OVER JO GOVAERTS: Vlaams dichteres en vertaalster (Leuven, 23 juni 1972). Govaerts studeerde slavistiek in Leuven. Ze verbleef enige tijd in Warschau, waar ze het werk van de Poolse auteur Zbigniew Hebert bestudeerde. Ze vertaalde de poëzie van de Poolse dichter Wislawa Szymborska. Op veertienjarige leeftijd debuteerde ze met een bundel poëzie in Hanne Ton (1987). Het is soms sarcastische, soms humoristische poëzie, maar soms is de toon uitgesproken pessimistisch. In haar tweede bundel De twijfelaar (1989) komen introspectieve belijdenisgedichten, kritische observaties van de werkelijkheid, maar ook wat meer taalgerichte verzen voor. Een latere bundel als Apenjaren (1998) is een mengeling van jeugdherinneringen, liefdespoëzie, beeldgedichten en poëzie over het mislukken van contact via de taal. Soms experimenteert ze met taal, maar sommige verzen zijn eenvoudig geschreven in een parlandostijl.

This collection features themes such as wonder at daily natural phenomena, the contrast between appearance and reality, language as a form of play, fascination with death, the dead and burial, and the meaning of existence measured by time, space, and human contact. This sixteen-year-old, remarkably talented poet has already achieved considerable skill in evoking atmospheres and especially in wordplay in these “I-poems.” This also reveals her limitation: particularly in the final lines of the poems, she strives for whimsical, witty remarks that in too many cases adversely affect the impact of the preceding lines. These punchlines do not have an alienating or ironic effect; they are merely “funny.” Poetry like that found in school newspapers, but of a high level. The collection will especially resonate with younger readers.
ABOUT JO GOVAERTS: Flemish poet and translator (Leuven, June 23, 1972). Govaerts studied Slavic studies in Leuven. She spent some time in Warsaw, where she studied the work of Polish author Zbigniew Herbert. She translated the poetry of Polish poet Wislawa Szymborska. At the age of fourteen, she debuted with a collection of poetry in Hanne Ton (1987). It is sometimes sarcastic, sometimes humorous poetry, but sometimes the tone is distinctly pessimistic. In her second collection, De twijfelaar (1989), there are introspective confessional poems, critical observations of reality, but also more language-focused verses. A later collection like Apenjaren (1998) is a mix of childhood memories, love poetry, image poems, and poetry about the failure of communication through language. Sometimes she experiments with language, but some verses are simply written in a parlando style.
