Het grote vuur is een boek van Cesare Pavese en Bianca Garufi, vertaald door Evalien Rauws en Luc de Rooy. Deze tweede editie, uitgegeven door Karaat in 2012, telt 139 pagina’s en is in perfecte staat.
Het verhaal draait om Silvia, die na een dringende oproep terugkeert naar haar geboortedorp in het Italiaanse platteland, samen met Giovanni, haar minnaar. Giovanni hoopt dat deze reis hun relatie nieuw leven inblaast, maar ontdekt gaandeweg de geheimen uit Silvia’s verleden. Het boek wordt verteld vanuit wisselende perspectieven van Giovanni en Silvia, wat een diepgaande kijk geeft op hun gecompliceerde relatie en onderdrukte verleden. Het is een aangrijpende verkenning van liefde, afkomst en omgeving.
Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) wordt beschouwd als een van de grootste Italiaanse auteurs van de twintigste eeuw. Hij schreef romans, poëzie, verhalen, essays en een dagboek (‘Leven als ambacht’), waarin hij zijn streven en falen in de liefde genadeloos becommentarieerde. Pavese pleegde zelfmoord in 1950, wat hij in zijn dagboek ‘literair aankondigde’. Het grote vuur is de enige roman van zijn hand die tot nu toe onvertaald bleef in het Nederlands.
Bianca Garufi (1918-2006) was een Italiaanse dichteres, romanschrijfster en psychoanalytica. Ze werkte voor de uitgeverij Einaudi, waar ze Pavese ontmoette en samen met hem aan Het grote vuur werkte. Garufi vertaalde ook werken van Claude Lévi-Strauss en Simone de Beauvoir. Na Het grote vuur schreef zij een vervolg genaamd ‘Il fossile’ (1962).

The story revolves around Silvia, who returns to her hometown in the Italian countryside with her lover Giovanni after receiving an urgent message. Giovanni hopes that this trip will rekindle their relationship but gradually uncovers secrets from Silvia’s past. The book is told from alternating perspectives of Giovanni and Silvia, providing a deep insight into their complex relationship and suppressed past. It is a poignant exploration of love, origin, and environment.
Cesare Pavese (1908-1950) is considered one of the greatest Italian authors of the twentieth century. He wrote novels, poetry, short stories, essays, and a diary (‘Leven als ambacht’), in which he mercilessly commented on his aspirations and failures in love. Pavese committed suicide in 1950, which he ‘literarily announced’ in his diary. The Great Fire is the only novel of his that remained untranslated into Dutch until now.
Bianca Garufi (1918-2006) was an Italian poet, novelist, and psychoanalyst. She worked for the publisher Einaudi, where she met Pavese and collaborated with him on The Great Fire. Garufi also translated works by Claude Lévi-Strauss and Simone de Beauvoir. After The Great Fire, she wrote a sequel titled ‘Il fossile’ (1962).
