Met zijn roman Het Chazaars woordenboek (Ned. vert. 1989) heeft de Servische schrijver Milorad Pavić (geb. 1929) internationaal erkenning verworven. Zijn nieuwe roman Landschap geschilderd met thee speelt, net als zijn eerdere boek, een boeiend spel met de lezer. Het boek kan, net als een kruiswoordraadsel, zowel ‘verticaal’ als ‘horizontaal’ gelezen worden. De ene lezing biedt vooral gegevens over de intrige, de andere laat ons kennisnemen van het lot van de hoofdpersonen. Dit zijn Atanas Svilar en zijn geliefde Vitaca Milut. In het eerste deel heeft Svilar, een begaafd architect, nog volstrekt geen succes, in het tweede zien we hem als een zeer geslaagd en welvarend zakenman. Zoals meestal bij Pavić, hoogleraar Zuidslavische cultuurgeschiedenis, is zijn roman een bonte mengeling van verhalen, legenden, dromen en historische feiten en gebeurtenissen.

With his novel Dictionary of the Khazars (Dutch translation 1989), the Serbian writer Milorad Pavić (b. 1929) gained international recognition. His new novel Landscape Painted with Tea plays an intriguing game with the reader, just like his previous book. The book can be read both ‘vertically’ and ‘horizontally,’ much like a crossword puzzle. One reading provides information about the plot, while the other lets us learn about the fate of the main characters. These are Atanas Svilar and his beloved Vitaca Milut. In the first part, Svilar, a gifted architect, has no success at all, while in the second part we see him as a very successful and prosperous businessman. As is usual with Pavić, a professor of South Slavic cultural history, his novel is a colorful mix of stories, legends, dreams, and historical facts and events.
