Deze vijfde bundel van Rob Schouten is buitengewoon boeiend, zowel wat betreft de structuur als de thematiek. Centraal staat de poging om de relatie tussen de menselijke ziel en het heelal te vinden en zichtbaar te maken; of preciezer, om het heelal in de menselijke ziel te herkennen en de ziel in de realiteit. Deze poging lijkt tevergeefs, maar roept een geweldig spanningsveld op waarin soms flarden van verbanden zichtbaar worden. Het heelal “stommelt” tevoorschijn, zoals beschreven in het gedicht “Hoofd” in de centrale afdeling “Omphalos” (Grieks voor het middelpunt van de aarde, ook de navel). De Coda van de bundel bestaat uit een enkel gedicht dat het vergeefse van de zoektocht benadrukt. Het is als een nestedoosje: steeds als de bovenste schil is verwijderd, volgt weer een andere identieke. Dieper doordringen betekent een verdere verwijdering van het inzicht in de essentie van het leven. Wie de eigenzinnige formuleringen van de dichter doorziet, kan genieten van prachtige poëzie.

This fifth collection by Rob Schouten is extraordinarily captivating, both in terms of structure and theme. Central to the work is the attempt to find and reveal the relationship between the human soul and the universe; or more precisely, to recognize the universe in the human soul and the soul in reality. This attempt seems futile, but it creates a great tension field in which glimpses of connections occasionally appear. The universe “stumbles” into view, as described in the poem “Head” in the central section “Omphalos” (Greek for the center of the earth, also the navel). The Coda of the collection consists of a single poem emphasizing the futility of the search. It resembles a nested box: as each outer layer is removed, another identical one follows. Delving deeper means further distancing from understanding the essence of life. Those who see through the poet’s idiosyncratic formulations can enjoy beautiful poetry.
